7 reasons to book a holiday to Lindos, Rhodes
Are you dreaming of escaping the UK for a laid-back week in the sun? Here’s why I suggest the Greek resort of Lindos should be top of your list when it comes to booking this year’s holiday.
1. Stunning scenery
Lindos is gorgeous. From the white buildings of the village nestled below the ancient Acropolis to the beautiful St Paul’s Bay with its sparking turquoise waters, Lindos really is picture perfect.
2. Glorious weather
Lindos is a great option if you’re looking to get away in the autumn. Whereas other holiday hotspots like Portugal and Spain can start cooling off in September, the island of Rhodes is much further south and temperatures in Lindos can still be nearing 30 degrees into early October. With uninterrupted sunshine and bright blue skies to give you that last boost of vitamin D before winter, autumn in Lindos is far more appealing than the thought of frosty mornings and darker evenings in the UK!
3. No mosquitoes
I am cat nip for mosquitoes. They love me. But both times I’ve stayed in Lindos, there’s not been a mosquito in sight. You can sit outside at the rooftop tavernas all night long and not worry about being bitten to death at this time of year.
4. Local charm
Lindos village sits at the base of the Acropolis, alongside the sandy cove of Pallas Beach. It’s a cluster of quaint white buildings within a maze of alleyways. As you wander through the village streets – no cars here, it’s far too narrow – everyone has a smile for you. When I last visited in September 2020, the world was still very much in turmoil and yet everyone I met, without fail, was incredibly warm and welcoming. There’s something special about Lindos, compared to other European holiday destinations. It has a unique charm unlike like anywhere else I’ve been.
5. Rooftop restaurants
You’ll be spoilt for choice by all the rooftop restaurants offering genuine Greek food. And it is Greek food that’s the star of the show in Lindos. Unlike other tourist destinations where you find restaurant after restaurant showcasing vast international menus, the tavernas in Lindos proudly champion Greek cuisine. Make sure to visit the fabulous Village House restaurant and try the lamb kleftiko followed by the baklava. You won’t regret it!
6. Drinks with a view
Cocktails at Courtyard Bar are a must. The views over Lindos and of the Acropolis from the rooftop are incredible, whether you’re there during the day or once the sun has set. The cocktails are superb (and a good price too). Despite its enviable location, there’s nothing pretentious about this place at all. It’s just all about soaking up the view with your favourite drink in hand. This unassuming little rooftop bar is honestly one of my favourites in the world.
7. Relax in style
Finally, and I almost don’t want to share this, but stay at Lindos Sun Hotel. It’s a fabulous little boutique hotel just outside the town. It’s about a 20-minute uphill walk into town, so admittedly it’s not the most convenient for those who like being right in the thick of all the action. But it’s well worth it for what you get in return. The hotel has the most wonderful staff, great food and a huge pool to spend your days lounging beside. It calls itself the most relaxing hotel in Lindos and it is the ideal place to escape from day-to-day life and recharge your batteries. You can book direct with the hotel, but I found a great package holiday deal flying from London Stansted with Jet2.
Having been to Lindos before the pandemic, things were obviously a little different visiting again in September 2020. You needed to wear masks indoors and sanitise your hands as you entered restaurants. But considering you spend most of the day in the open air, either at the pool, beach or rooftop restaurants, I certainly enjoyed my holiday just as much when I travelled pre-COVID. Despite all that was going on in the world, Lindos retained its unique charm and it certainly won’t be my last visit to this Greek gem. I’ll definitely be booking another holiday to Lindos at some point!
